kittendied-what can i do about this guilt feeling?advice, please?

2 days ago,the neighbors cat came into my front yard.i have 2 indoor-only cats, but they have a sunporch with big windows and plants to enjoy.they seemed to like watching the outdoor cat and she seemed to like going to the windows and visiting my cats.none of them were stressed or angry, they seemed relaxed and inquisitive.my first thought was to shoo her back across the road, but cars were coming and i figured it was safer for her to relax on our patio than for me to go out and startle her or try to pick her up.so i left them to visit.a little while later,my dog wanted to go out.we found a puppy 4 years ago,he grew to be enormous, looks like maybe a wirehaired pointer mix.some sort of hunting dog.he was raised with our 2 cats, who were kittens when we found him.they are shelter rescues.he gets along well with the cats and is gentle and affectionate with them.they sleep next to each other.so,what happened next is terrible.i let the dog out,but heard a commotion.we have a wooden 6 foot tall privacy fence around our backyard, but the gate has open grillwork.somehow,a kitten slipped thru or climbed over.the dog seized the kitten.i grabbed it,but it bit me and i reflexively dropped it.he seized it again,i grabbed it and brought it inside but it died in seconds.i am heartbroken about the panic and fear it experienced in its last moments and about its death. i blame my self for not holding on to it..i keep being haunted by the scene in my mind.i blame myself for not returning the cat to its yard.i didnt know she had kittens, one must have followed her to my yard.the neighbor says theyre not really his cats, she is a stray he’s been feeding for 2 years.she needs to be spayed.she must have had many kittens by now,in the wooded area behind the neighbors house.my husband and whole family feel upset and traumatised by this death, its affecting everything-i feel tremendous guilt because if i had just sent her back home,it would not have happened.any advice?if i can trap/spay her it would help, but after both of us being downsized/out of work/rehired for lower pay,our days of spending for neighbors pets may be numbered,we have our own vet bills.the people in my neighborhood let pets roam free and dont spay/neuter.they mainly thought my upsetness over a dead kitten was somewhat odd.they are of a different culture than mine and dont seem to value animal lives, leaving dogs on 5 foot chains for life.i have paid to neuter animals, rehomed several with the owners permission, and fed animals that were starved by their owners till i could ask to help re-home them.i dont call the crowded local kill shelter, the nondescript beat up animals here would not stand a chance.sorry such a long letter.i feel worn down with grief/trauma and the constant expense of dealing with the irresponsibility of others.its affecting my relationships,i have been so sad and angry the last two days.anyone else go thru this?how do u cope?and,am i at fault for letting the cat stay in my yard-i had no idea she had kittens that would follow her.they must be weaned or nearly weaned, she had no obvious look of a nursing animal.plus,it kills me that when the kitten scratched/bit,i dropped her right to the waiting dog.i feel if i had been stronger i could have held on and saved the kitten.i keep beating myself up and i cant seem to stop obsessing over this.my husband buried the kitten and made a resting place with bricks and stones and tried to make it beautiful, but i cant even go outside and look at it.

Neighbor's dog killed my dog and neighbor refuses to do anything?

Let me be clear – it’s my 75 year old mother in law’s dog… my husband and I were taking care of him while my grandmother is away on vacation. This afternoon, I got in from work and he needed out, so I put him on a leash and took him out… our neighbors have a history of being really lax with their dogs and not really ever watching them. My mother in law’s dog was such a sweet, cute little Welsh Corgi – Aus. Shepherd mix named Charlie (that we got for her from the local humane society), couldn’t stand more than a foot tall or so… and our neighbor’s dog is a HUGE English Mastiff… they’re always barking at each other through the fence, but we never thought anything of it.
Anyway, today, the neighbors had left their gate open and when I took the dog out, here came the mastiff bolting towards us and barking viciously… at first I just kind of pulled Charlie close to me because I had always thought the mastiff was a really sweet dog (I gave her food every night through the fence, pet her, talked to her, etc). But the dog JUMPED on poor Charlie and went right for the throat. Charlie was defenseless and the mastiff was killing him, biting and biting at his neck…
at that point I was on the ground trying to wrestle the mastiff away. I was DRIPPING in blood, both my blood and the dog’s blood (the mastiff bit me repeatedly). then another neighbor from down the street who was putting up Christmas lights came over with a hammer and started to beat and beat the mastiff with the wooden part of the hammer to no avail… then my husband drove up and stopped his car in the middle of the street and jumped out to try to get the mastiff off. He got a HUGE gash on his arm from being bitten. we were all in the middle of the road, rolling around in the gravel, yelling and screaming (I was swearing like a sailor at the top of my lungs), beating the mastiff, who was intent on killing Charlie. the neighbor who was helping got knocked over by the mastiff and fell over and broke her wrist, but she kept trying to get the mastiff away. we were all dripping with dark dog blood, and then it was all over… charlie died right on top of me. he was ripped all open, blood and ravaged body parts everywhere, and even after he had died, that damn mastiff was still at his throat, shaking him and shaking him, and we still couldn’t get her off… we finally succeeded and we dragged charlie to the garage to make sure that he had died, and the mastiff charged after us and attacked his corpse over and over… it was so horrible … i could hardly watch =/
anyway, the neighbors whose dog this was weren’t at home while all this was happening… eventually they found out about it and they refuse to do anything. they’re telling the police I opened the gate and let the mastiff out! they won’t take any of the blame, won’t pay any of the medical expenses (we all went to the ER), won’t do ANYTHING! they won’t even answer our calls. the police here are incompetent pigs and don’t seem to care about any of this.

what the hell can i do about this horrible situation?
i’ve never dealt with ANYTHING like this before… I’m just so sad… he was such a sweet, happy dog and he died in my arms :(

i need help with my puppy what should i do?

ok so i live in the country where the clset house to mine is like a 5 min drive away. we have a fence around our property and i have a fenced off place in the back where i let my two 1 yr old pit bulls and 2 month pit bull puppy run around during the day. my fence in the front are 5 ft high and are chain linked. to get to my back yard you have to have the key to my front gate and go on the side of my house and unlock that gate which is a picked fence you cant see thjrough and is 6 1/2 feet tall so my dogs cant jump or climb out. So the other day i came home from shopping and my 2 month old pit bull puppy was running around in the front yard and my two older pit bulls were gone, my two gates locks were cut open. they cant climb out there were no holes where they dug out. i started to freak out. the same day i went out looking for them and found them at some guys house tied up in the yard. i went over and told the guy those are my dogs. he said not any more he was calling the animal patrol to pick them up and i said why and he said he was "walking past my house and tried to attack him. Now i know my dogs they would never hurt a fly they are completely mellow dogs. i walk them past this mans house everyday and he gives me a evil look and i told him how many times my dogs saw you and they play with you. Now as soon as the dog person came i told him that sum 1 had broken my locks on my two gates and had either tried to break into my house or something and didnt know my dogs were back there and my dogs wanted to play. so the guy had no bite marks and he claimed the dogs chased him all the way home. and hell oof course if a dog wants to play and you run they r going to chase you. So the dog catcher looked at my dogs and my dogs gladly let him pet them and he played with them. i said yea because they r friendly dogs. The dog catcher said for my neighbors safety i should walk around with a muzzel. i dont think my dogs deserve it because they didnt bite te guy. what shoud i do.. do you think this would be the person who broke my locks. because he hates my dogs. what should i do?

What are my legal rights in having my landlord repair our backyard and gate (Colorado)?

I lease a 3 bedroom single family home in Littleton, CO. The primary reason I rent a house vs an apartment or townhouse is that I have a dog who needs a backyard. I have been living here since October 2007 and just signed a lease for another year. So I’m legally committed to stay here unitl October 2008. When I moved in I was requried to submit a 0 pet deposit. So the property managment company is well aware that a dog resides at the house. The house has a fence and gate to seperate the the backyeard from the frontyard, street, etc. This gate is just about ready to fall over. The reason for this is the gate and fence are extremely old. The wood appears to be decaying and the posts need to be replaced. According to the maintenace person who the property management company utilizes fixing the gate and fence will run around 0-600. I called the property management company today and asked about when they planned on fixing the gate and fence. I was told that the owners would probably not be interested in fixing the gate/fence. He mentioned the primary reason for this was because the primary reason I wanted it fixed is becuase I have a dog. He also mentioned that I wanted it fixed I would probably have to pay someone on my own. The fence and gate are part of the house. Are the owners/proparlty management legally required to fix the fence? What legal rights do I have to make them perform the fence/gate repairs?
In addition, I have always paid my rent on time. I actually pay when I get my paycheck, so I’m always paying rent two weeks ahead of schedule. In my eyes I’m the model tennant. If the house has small problems that I can fix myself, such as a light swith that needs replacement, I do it myself rather than contacting the property managment company. I’m also pretty quiet, travel on business often, thus I’m not home to often, and have never had any problems with any of the neighbors, police, etc.
